This pop radio smash was also a big club hit.

In late 1990 and early 1991, Tara Kemp made noise around the world with an incredibly seductive song called “Hold You Tight.”  Originally aired on San Francisco’s 106.1 KMEL, the song quickly caught on and soon she was an overnight success.  Tara seemed to make a strong effort to “fit in” with the R&B audience.  Her second single “Piece of My Heart” was a decent follow-up to “Hold You Tight,” but sonically they were very closely related.  After leaving Giant Records and releasing a little-known follow-up album in 1994, Tara Kemp virtually disappeared from the commercial music industry after what looked like a promising beginning.

Tara Kemp's career ended before it even got a fair chance to grow.  It was through her mutual connections with Giant Records and Big Beat Records that she got her first record deal in 1990.  Former KMEL jock Hosh Gureli introduced her first single, "Hold You Tight," to the San Francisco area with immediate success.  The follow-up single, "Piece of my Heart," did almost as well, but with a third single release from the album, "Too Much," numbers began to drop.  Tara left Giant Records for Nerve Records in 1992, where she released a second album, Come Together, in 1994.  The album as well as the title track, released as a single, failed to lived up to their expectations.

Billboard magazine once described Tara Kemp as an artist with the mass appeal of Paula Abdul but with a voice more competent.
