St. Vitus' Cathedral, Prague

Within the Prague Castle complex, Matt, Dana, Sisina, and Petra explore the spiritual center of Bohemia.

The spires of St. Vitus' Cathedral loom over Dana.

This set of arches was
the main entryway to
the cathedral for centuries.

A chamber on the other side
of those grilled windows holds
the royal crown and national jewels.

Petra

Young St. Wenceslas and his grandmother, St. Ludmila...

...are the centerpiece of the Mucha stained glass window in the Archbishop's Chapel.

Matt

Dating from 1590, when Prague was a major Hapsburg power...

...is the tomb of the
first Hapsburg emperor.

This carved wood relief of
Prague was created in 1630.

It depicts the victorious
Hapsburg armies entering
Prague Castle in 1620...

...while the Protestant king escapes over the Charles Bridge (before it had any statues).

Fluttering cherubs hold up
a red velvet canopy...

...surrounding the tomb
of St. John of Nepomuk.

Nepomuk is the priest
whose body was flung from
the Charles Bridge in 1393.

Two tons of silver were
used for this tomb's pedestal,
statues and angels.

This baroque addition to the cathedral took from 1733 to 1736 to create.

Through this archway is Wenceslas Chapel.

The 14th century murals all around the walls chronicle his life.

Can't get into the cathedral through this gate, can ya?

But check out the intricate detail in those sculptures.

Sisina gets her nativity on.

The obelisk was originally
much taller but broke in transit.

Here's that mural above
the archway again.

On it, the six patron saints
kneel below Jesus.

It's a 14th-century mosaic
depicting the Last Judgment.

Some go to heaven,
some go to hell.

The hall was big enough for jousts.  Horses galloped right inside!
