Elizabethton, Tennessee

On day two of Matt's visit to Tennessee, Dana takes him to historic Elizabethton, childhood home of his favorite uncle.

Matt's Uncle Lewis, who
grew up in Elizabethton.

Elizabethton is in Carter County,
first settled in 1769.

This bridge is the oldest one of its type in the USA
still in use by pedestrians.

Hey! Lewis!
When did you get here?

It's one of two bridges in the state identified by a Tennessee
historical marker.

The bridge spans the river for
134 feet, resting on earth
and limestone abutments.

Dana cops a squat.

Hand-forged steel spikes and hand-threaded bolts fastened together the massive pieces of oak flooring.

The covered bridge survived numerous floods, including
the great flood of 1901...

...which destroyed all the other bridges in the county that
crossed the Doe River.

Dana can straddle with the best of 'em.

River Doe or River “D'oh”?

See the three crosses
at the top of the hill?

And now let's go somewhere else!

Follow Dana! She knows the way.

Driving away toward our next Tennessee adventure...

Doe! And... D'oh! Look who we
left behind in Elizabethton!
